I qualified as a Swedish massage therapist in 1997, while I was working as an independent art teacher in schools and business places. My interest and love for colour lead me to do a couple of diploma courses in Colour and Light Therapy and since 2003 I practise and teach Colour and Light Therapy locally and internationally (in a creative way when possible).
Colour Therapy uses the different wavelengths of the colour spectrum, in order to recharge parts of our bodies that also vibrate on similar wavelengths. For example, if we suffer from a sore throat, we can apply the colour blue (via light or a piece of fabric) around the throat area. All the cells of our throat area vibrate in the same frequency as that of the colour blue. The best way to get a complete ‘dose’ of each colour is to be exposed to sunlight for an hour each day. Colour and light are one of the same energy.
3. How do the colours relate to the chakras?
Chakras are our energy centres located in seven defined parts of our bodies. Each of these energy centres vibrate in specific frequencies and corresponds to the frequency of one of the seven colours of the spectrum. Chakras go from the front to the back of our bodies.
Red area: from the pubic bone to the end of our toes
Orange area: underneath the belly button to the start of the pubic bone
Yellow area: underneath the diaphragm to the belly button
Green area: top of diaphragm to the collar bones
Blue area: from the collar bones, to the top of the nose
Indigo area: from our eyes, to the top of our head
Violet area: just above the head
When a specific colour is addressed to the corresponding chakra, extra energy is given to that area which also stimulates hormones and activates different organs. Colour light recharges our energy centres (our very own colour batteries!)
4. In your book The Art of Colour Therapy, you talk about the nine colour personalities, I understand that each person has four colours that make up their personality, can you please explain what the four colours represent and how you work out which colours you are, using numerology?
Each of us has four colours that define our personality depending on their qualities.
We find our first colour from the DAY of our birth. This colour shows the qualities we came into this world with; these qualities are deeply part of our character; we do not have to learn them, they come with us anyway.
We find the second colour from the MONTH of our birth. This colour’s qualities show us the tools we need to use in order to make our life journey smooth.
We find our third colour from the the YEAR of our birth. This colour represents qualities we need to learn and conquer, throughout our lives, through work, relationships and life’s challenges.
To find our fourth colour which represents our overall personality we need to add the number of the DAY, the MONTH and the YEAR together till we end up with a one digit number; this new number is our very special personality number!
The qualities of this new colour define our main personality.
To convert the above dates into colours, you need to add each separate number of the day, the month or the year together and then reduce to a single digit.
Each single digit corresponds to a specific colour i.e.
Red=1
Orange=2
Yellow=3
Green=4
Blue=5
Indigo=6
Violet=7
Magenta=8
Gold=9
For example, if your birthday was 23-05-1974, to find your overall personality colour, add all the numbers together 2+3+5+1+9+7+4= 31, then reduce to a single number 3+1=4 - Your number is 4 and your colour is Green.
5. 5. With the third colour (colour you want to become more like), is the aim to be more of this colour then any other colour? If so, do you have any advice of how to go about doing it? I.e. if my third colour is red, should I set up public speaking opportunities to push myself into the spotlight or should I start wearing lots of red clothes?
Of course you can start wearing lots of red; the colours vibrations will inspire you to do ‘red things’. In my book you can find the words that describe the colour red in the RED chapter. The best way to fulfil your red mission is to do things that those words suggest i.e. have courage, be strong, have passion, be entrepreneurial etc. Think, red, act red, become red!
To be compatible it is good to have one or two similar colours. This helps to understand the other person and not only to accept them for the way they are. For friendships and business deals it could work even if two people do not share any colours, but for romantic or more intimate friendships a couple of similar colours are highly recommended.
Indeed colour therapy can greatly help and bring more harmonious relationships with ourselves and others! By thoroughly knowing the qualities of each colour, i.e. what reactions, feelings, ideas, thoughts etc each colour of the spectrum stimulates in us, also what each colour means depending on its position in our date of birth, we become aware and sensitised to the needs and ways of the other person, so that we can approach them in the way they feel most comfortable with. What an invaluable tool Colour is!
8. What colour would you recommend painting the rooms in your home?
Bedroom: Soft lilaccream, soft pink., light blue,
Bathroom: Light blue for relaxation, also orange if in a cold kind of house. Green plants add extra relaxation.
Lounge: Cream, light peach, primrose yellow, soft emerald
Office/Study: Yellow on one wall for stimulation of the brain, balanced with light blue for serenity. Indigo is also good for office accessories, curtains, decorations
Kitchen: Bright oranges and reds to stimulate the appetite and bring the family together.
9. Could you advice when is best to wear each of the different colours? White: the colour of purity, openness, freshness, new beginnings. Wear it to inspire respect, trust and admiration
Black: Wear it to keep your privacy, or to make a statement of your authority, to be sexy (little black dress) or in control (good for business when we need to have a ‘poker face’ attitude.
Red: Red is great for selling, as people act spontaneously under its influence. Red stimulates passion, desire, earthiness, stability, courage, will to succeed. When you wear red people will look at you with a smile and a hope.
Orange: Wear orange for a party mood or to get you out of feeling low. Good for working with food, people, dancing. A very happy colour that will make you lots of friends.
Yellow: Another very friendly colour. Wear it if you want to make a statement of your bright and special personality. If you work with children. In our country this colour is easier to wear as accessories instead of an overall colour.
Green: A very relaxing colour, excellent for doctors and carers as it stimulates balance and harmony. Wear it if you want to show that you care for the environment, that you are solid and profound like, mother nature.
Blue: Light blue is one of the most popular and beloved colours. Men and woman love it alike. Wear it when you work with children, older people, for a classic elegant look. Wear it close to your neck-throat for public speaking or for better communicating with others. Wear it when you want everybody talking to you and wanting your reliable company!
Indigo: Indigo is good for structure. Teachers will do well with indigo, so will professions of the barr. It inspires wisdom, loyalty, faith, deep knowledge. Indigo will make any outfit more elegant and smart.
Violet: Wear violet to inspire gentleness, generosity and creativity. People will look at you in a dreamy way. Violet is a great colour when you work with spiritual issues, running self development workshops, creating music or art. Violet is like a gentle breeze full of strength and magic too.
Multi colours: If you have a good eye for colours and the courage to wear them, go ahead; you will make a mark wherever you go and people will love looking at you indulging in your colours’ healing energy. If you can become a colourful person, there is no place where you should have to restrict your imagination (apart from a funeral) and you would constantly be fed and re energised by their energy. It’s a great feeling!
Magenta: This is a very feminine colour albeit a bit mature. It is the colour of release. A bit heavy for the daytime it can make a stunning outfit for any special occasion as far as you know that you will be seen as serious, respectable, experienced yet very inviting and warm!
Gold: You can wear gold to inspire luxury and glamour. Gold in accessories is easier to wear of course, unless you are a Hollywood star. A bit of gold goes a long way and it gives a special charm and a feeling of abundance to whoever wears it. Excellent for any evening outing; it makes the outfit!
Silver: Silver in accessories is mystical and magical, it has the mercurial fluidity of the ever changing moon; it decorates without showing off, while keeping the freshness of the moment! Wear silver any time of the day; it completes your appearance and adds sophistication, while it is also playful and cheerful!
Pink: This is a very popular colour too, just like light blue, soft pink will always attract people to you for comfort and relaxation. Wear it when you work with delicate people (oldies or babies), when you feel strong to give out unconditional love, when you want to attract love and gentleness (also self love). Sleep between soft pink covers for a cuddly ‘womb environment’ night, but change them with other colours eventually so that you do not go back to be helpless as a baby! Wear baby pink when you want to pass unnoticed. Bright pinks are sexier, noisier and absolutely irresistible.
